Khartoum
Had been working in Khartoum, Sudan from Feb-2001 till May-2005. The city has metamorphosed in recent years, thanks to the strong export of petroleum. Back to year 2001, electricity outage happened almost daily in this capital, was torturing during the summer days in the Sahara desert, even the nights are scorching. The city itself looks brownish and yellowish, stretches of green vegetation are mainly found along the Nile Rivers, rest of the city has only a little green studded sporadically. The occasional sandstorm is not pleasant at all. Fine sand and dust blanket the sky approached with strong wind. Do expect power outage then. Somehow, I think it helps to lower down the temperature slightly. This is the plus! No shopping center, supermarket (until Afra Shopping Mall opened in 2004), no alcohol (of course illegal sources are available), no cinema… night life is boring to foreigners. In general Sudanese are friendly. We did feel safe to walk alone on the street in Khartoum center without any safety threat or criminals that outspread in some other African countries.
